Masterclass in strategic communications for National Nursing Associations

Masterclass 01: 2 July 2023, 10:00 – 11.30

Maximum number of participants: 30

Language: English

Description:

ICN is interested in assisting its members, National Nursing Associations (NNAs), and affiliating organizations to strengthen their ability to shape nursing and health policy at regional, national and global settings. Effective use of media is essential to engage public discourse and create evidence-informed policy, but research indicates that nurses and nursing associations face unique internal and external challenges in doing so. This master class is designed to help NNAs recognize and address these challenges, discover the strengths they have, and identify opportunities for strengthening their strategic communications. A pre-workshop questionnaire will be sent to registrants to prepare them for developing a strategic communications plan around a policy issue of importance to the NNA. For more details, please see the programme of the master class.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the imperative for nurses and nursing associations to use media as a strategic communications tool to advance the profession and the health of the public.
  2. Identify the barriers to nurses and nursing associations in accessing and using media.
  3. Assess the capacity of the NNA to access and interact strategically with media around policy goals.
  4. Identify priorities for development of a strategic communications plan that aligns with the association’s overall strategic plan.

Caregiver VR - Scaling Nursing Capacity Through Virtual Reality Training
(Kaleidoscope XR)

Masterclass 03: 2 July 2023, 13:00 – 14:00

Masterclass 09: 3 July 2023, 13:00 – 14:00

Masterclass 15: 4 July 2023, 13:00 – 14:00

Audience: Clinical Nursing Educators, Healthcare Institution Leadership

Maximum number of participants: 30

Language: English

Description:

The number of individuals aged 65+ is projected to double from 703 million in 2019 to 1.5 billion globally by 2050. In response to this expected growth, there will be an increasing demand for well-trained caregivers.

To address this, Kaleidoscope XR has developed Caregiver VR, a virtual reality (VR) platform that allows nurses to train in a hands-on way, exposing them to real world scenarios that are dangerous or stressful in a risk-free environment. The platform accomplishes this by facilitating live VR simulations between educators and students anywhere, globally role-playing as caregiver and resident in front of a virtual classroom that are viewing the experience through either VR or Desktop modes. The platform also enables trainees to practice interactions with and experience the world from the perspective of those experiencing dementia and ageing. This helps nursing educators to share core soft skills in a hands-on and engaging way globally, reduces training costs, increases accessibility and nursing capacity, all leading to better healthcare outcomes of patients.

Objectives:

1.To educate healthcare stakeholders on the technology of Virtual Reality and its applications for healthcare
2.To highlight the effectiveness of the Caregiver VR platform vs traditional methods of learning soft-skills and how this tool can be used to scale nursing training capacity and increase recruitment and retention.

Evidence-based research will form the foundation for this important topic and pictures of the various wound types will bring each scenario to life.

Objectives

1. Review common wound aetiologies including pressure injuries, diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds and infection and skin tears through case based learning
2. Develop clarity in clinical decision making when selecting wound management products.

Becoming a Leadership Organization: Strategies to Embed Leadership Organization - or System-Wide (The Canadian College of Health Leaders CCHL)

Masterclass 07: 3 July 2023, 10:00-11:30

Masterclass 13: 4 July 2023, 10:00-11:30

Audience: Strategies to Embed Leadership Organization – or System-Wide: Senior human resources (HR)/organizational development (OD) professionals (director or VP level) and executive leaders interested in further integrating leadership in their organizations.

Maximum number of participants: 30

Language: English

Description:

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted unequivocally the importance of healthcare leaders and leadership around the world at all levels of organizations. And yet, many workplaces provide little to no leadership development for their people, and programs that are offered are usually exclusive to those in positional roles. To succeed in the evolving global healthcare context, this needs to change urgently. Leadership development is also a key retention strategy, which is especially pertinent during the most severe healthcare human resources crisis of our generation.

The session is informed by CCHL’s ongoing work as one of the top two largest providers of healthcare leadership development in Canada, as well as the by two most recently published systematic literature reviews of medical leadership development, authored by Dr. Jaason Geerts.

Objectives

1. Understand the key features of a leadership organization and definable, progressive levels of organizational leadership integration
2. Discuss clear, evidence-informed, strategic, customized next steps to enhance leadership integration and effectiveness across organizations and communities
3. Identify priority areas and important first and next
steps to advance integration.

Masterclass 16: 4 July 2023, 16:00-17:30

Audience: This session is best suited for the change maker or a change leader who possesses the passion to advance the primary nursing model of care in the home and community and/or other healthcare practice setting. Furthermore, the change maker or change leader wants to gain real-life insights in how to bring nurse empowered work culture and primary community nursing to life.

Maximum number of participants: 30

Language: English

Description:

Life care, not just medical/health care, can holistically address care needs of the growing older adult population. SE Health designed and implemented a nurse-led organizational model of care. This model is titled H.O.P.E. – Home, Opportunity, People Empowerment. Three key success insights will be shared with lived experience scenarios: 1) empowering the nurse and the client, 2) implementation science informed execution, and 3) operationalizing nurse practice with enabling technology and redesigned structures, processes, and leadership. As Primary Nursing is the core of this organizational model, initial implementation has focused on optimizing scope of nursing practice and continuity of care. H.O.P.E. nursing competency development through a Novice to Expert journey was also undertaken. Further, unique to home community care nursing specialty is the knowledge, skill, and judgment in client caseload management and care scheduling. Therefore, operationalization of nursing practice in this model requires both optimization of Service Coordination function and digital enablement. One digital innovation, MySE Life App designed by nurses for nurses will be highlighted. To conclude, sharing of these key success insights will further illustrate how home community care transformation can play a mission critical role in the broader health care system.

Objectives

Participants will learn the following:
1. How creating a nurse empowered practice culture impacts client safety, quality care and sustainable business outcomes
2. Strategies to transform and lead change as an empowered nurse leader
3. Enabling structures and processes to support optimizing scope of practice of home and community nurses
4. Implementation successes, challenges, and insights to embed H.O.P.E. as the organizational model of care
5. How digital and technology accelerated change adoption and empowered nurses to make decisions regarding client care.
